What is an orthopedic cushion and what types are there?

There are many situations why you have entered to read this article: a family member with sciatica pain, a couple with hemorrhoid problems or a patient with any of these ailments and others that occur while sitting in a chair for so long.

At Europieles we know that, sometimes, doubts arise and we believe that before spending money on a product we should be well informed about what we buy. Therefore, in this article we will try to answer common questions and help you choose which model to choose according to the pathology that the person has.

What is an orthopedic cushion?

Obviously, we all know what a cushion is, but what does it mean that it is orthopedic?

They are cushions that are designed to reduce the pressure exerted by the body when spending so much time sitting in a chair, allowing a better circulation of blood and preventing the creation of marks, wounds, bedsores and, in the worst case, ulcers.

In this case, we want to emphasize preventive cushions that focus on a more general public. They are the basic models for preventing the above-mentioned symptoms and are a very good choice for patients that due to health reasons stay for long periods of their day to day sitting. These cushions reduce the risk of ulcers and help distribute the weight of the body proportionally, improving its quality of life.

If we talk about orthopedic cushions, we are talking about Ortotex Medical with these different types and models that we highlight below.

1) Square viscoelastic cushion

It is the general and standard model. Specifically this is made of viscoelastic foam, adapting in this way to the body morphology of the person. Due to its material, we highlight its memory effect and its high capacity of recovery of the original form after use.

In addition, it has an ideal temperature regulation, helping to prevent problems and discharge body pressure points that can be derived from reduced mobility and prolonged sitting. As a result, a relief of body pressures is achieved, contributing to avoid contractures, discomfort and pain.

It is especially recommended for the public not to look for something specific, but need a cushion of these characteristics, making its presence absolutely necessary in any orthopedics.

2) Grooved viscoelastic cushion

With the same technology as the previous model, this version that we present to you has as main difference evident the change of the design. This decision to change the design is not aesthetic, but adds more comfort to the product.

This type will be more interesting for customers who need extra comfort or who have a greater sensitivity.

3) Anatomical viscoelastic cushion

This model not only seeks to make the patient comfortable, but to help to have a good position when adapting to it.

It is very interesting for clients who suffer from back problems or who have other types of postural needs.

4) Ring viscoelastic cushion

It is a model with high performance and an absolutely useful design, focused on patients with pathologies such as hemorrhoids or other similar types, since the hole in the middle allows the affected area not to be in contact with any surface.

5) Horseshoe viscoelastic cushion

Finally, a design very similar to the previous one, but with its horseshoe shape can help to have more rested legs.

Both this model and the previous one are designed for the same pathologies and, in general, depends on personal taste and to test the designs and choose the one that best suits the user so he gets the expected comfort.

Some things to consider in product hygiene?

It is important that when buying any of these cushions we take into account the hygiene of it, since it will have a very long use and the interesting thing is to maintain its useful life as wide as possible.

In this sense the main recommendation is to machine wash, centrifuge and, finally and if possible, sterilize them. They can also be cleaned with a damp cloth or sponge. The outer sheath can be washed up to 95 degrees and the filling can be hand washed with warm water and neutral soap.

In the end, the better we treat the product, the longer it stays with us.
